What to expect

Character

A classic Dolomite hut-to-hut route: sharp limestone peaks, short technical passages, long descents and a rifugio almost every evening.

Who it's for

Hikers confident in mountain terrain who want a big alpine experience without glacier gear.

Suggested pace

8–11 days. A slower pace allows time for Cinque Torri, Lagazuoi and Civetta; a faster pace increases pressure on hut reservations.

Logistics

The start at Lago di Braies is reached by bus from Dobbiaco; the end in Belluno is served by train. Book rifugi months in advance.

Resupply & permits

Resupply

Food is mainly available at rifugi. Bigger resupply makes sense around Cortina, Alleghe/Pescul or at road passes.

Permits & regulations

No special permit for through-hikers, but overnight stays and any bivouacking must follow park and rifugi regulations.

Why go

  • Iconic Dolomite scenery.
  • An excellent rifugi network.
  • A great first major alpine traverse for experienced hikers.

Watch out for

  • Rifugi fill up well in advance.
  • Thunderstorms in the Dolomites can build quickly.
  • Some variants have mildly exposed terrain.
